[it takes a couple of minutes to answer the door, but there Dick is in all his rumpled, pj'd glory-- there's the enticing smell of semi-burning eggos wafting in from the background]
Hey. [Faith gives him a small smile as she slips through the door, clad in the same clothes she'd had on last night. A wrinkled tank top and practically painted-on jeans.] Might not be the only one coming if you play your cards right. Again.
[Look. She can't help it. Faith feels a tension building in her for coming back to the 'scene of the crime', so to speak, and is trying to play it off. And the PJs might be working for her, too. Or maybe it's just him.]
[and certainly seeing her in the get-up from last night doesn't bring back any titillating memories or anything. the rumpled look looks good on her, as anything does.
so that's why she gets the snort, the playful roll of his eyes. Dick gestures towards the modest kitchen, and the plates he's already laid out.]
Like a slayer with a bone. Or a stake. Why don't you get your energy up before you make any promises?
That's true. Gotta carbo load for any kind of marathon. [Faith winks, pushing down any awkward feelings as she moves past him toward the kitchen.] You got any OJ?
[he's already got the jug of milk on the table, because he's a freak who can drink a full glass of it with his meals, even dinner sometimes lord help him. he's there when the toaster pops, two hot fresh Eggos plated, two more slotted in]
[Faith pops open his fridge, perusing it before snatching the jug at the top shelf, helping herself to the cabinet for a glass, to bring both over to the table and plopping down in a chair to pour.]
Got a busy day today? [The awkward returns, since she so rarely has to navigate small talk the morning after.]
[if Dick feels any of the same awkwardness, he doesn't let it come to fruition; he's content to wink at her from across the table while stuffing his face]
Depends on how this breakfast goes. But no, just tinkering on some stuff. How about you? I know most of your work's done at night, too.
[That makes her laugh, waggling her brows flirtatiously as she stabs her waffle to cut off a piece.] Was probably going to have a rousing morning of watching some the Price is Right and stupid soap operas while I train.
I've also been taking some classes in the afternoons. [She stuffs her mouth with a huge piece of waffle, chewing while she talks.] I kind of... stopped going to school at sixteen, never finished, so. I was gonna get my GED. It's stupid, I know.
Hey, I love a good ol' marathon of trashy tv. I usually have music when I go through my reps.
[he smiles around his mouthful, an encouraging nod. Dick knew they had a bit in common, but to know they have this much in common-- it's a little bittersweet]
It isn't stupid. Believe it or not, I had to drop out, too. Never got to get my GED, I think it's great you are, Faith.
Really? [Looks honestly shocked at this news. Maybe she'd made a few unfair assumptions about Dick, considering who'd adopted him. That he'd had more opportunities than she'd ever gotten and therefore fewer of the same problems. Of course, running around fighting crime at night should have been a pretty big clue that he's not exactly living his life on easy street.
She smiles, cutting off another piece of her waffle and dunking it in a hefty helping of syrup and jam.] You ever thought about trying to get it? We could go to the classes together?
[Look at her, trying to spend more time with him. Fuck. She's cooked, isn't she?]
[it's complicated. its not complicated. it's stupid, its agonizing. it hasn't been a chain around his neck, most of his day-and-night job opportunities offering him undercover jobs with fancy fake diplomas that he can print out and put on his wall if he wanted.
the toaster pops in the background, and he gives it a minute.]
You doing the basic stuff? P.E, which I'm sure is a breeze, the last couple projects? I wouldn't be against it. You'll let me cheat off your tests, right?
[She laughs mid-bite--] PE isn't part of the testing. It's like... science, math, social studies, and English? You could totally cheat off me if you want, although it would kind of ruin the point.
[The point for Faith being to prove she could do it. To prove that she wasn't the idiot that she'd always internalized she was.]
Yeah, right. [She scoffs at that idea, snorting as she reaches for her OJ. Faith is working hard, but she doubts she'll be acing anything and is just as dubious that she'd do better than him.]
That's why I'm doing it, too. I don't think I'll ever have a normal job. But it would be nice to know I could, if I wanted. [Of course, for any decent job, she'd also have to get a degree.
Yeah, I know. Not like I have room to talk, either. [She's not had anything but her night job. And the occasional distraction... which is what Dick was supposed to be.
She snorts at the suggestion, stuffing another piece of waffle in her mouth.]
I could. I've taught more than a few of the mini-Slayers, so it's not like I don't know how. Where do you teach gymnastics? I could do self-defense or something. Or sword fighting?
[It would just mean she'd have to think through how a normal person could fight someone off. Having superstrength made things a little different.]
